Breastfeeding Counseling for Health Plan Members

Are you a new mother or expecting a baby?

You may be able to receive breastfeeding support and lactation counseling services. These services are covered at no cost for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) plan members if you go to a trained, network provider.* This could be a provider such as an obstetrician-gynecologist, pediatrician, certified nurse midwife, certified nurse practitioner or certified nurse specialist.

Our Blue Distinction® Centers (BDC) for Maternity Care may offer breastfeeding support. Or if you'd prefer, ask your doctor about providers in your area who offer these services. Confirm the provider is in the BCBSNM network by using the Provider Finder®. Or call Customer Service at the number listed on your BCBSNM member ID card to confirm network status.

* Applies only to members enrolled in non-grandfathered plans. A grandfathered plan is a health plan that was in place when the Affordable Care Act (ACA) became law in 2010. Grandfathered plans don't have to meet all the requirements of the ACA, so they may not cover the same services as a non-grandfathered plan. Don't know if your plan is grandfathered or non-grandfathered? Call BCBSNM to find out the status of your plan and what is covered.
